On the 15th of February will take place in Los Angeles the Oscar for Music. Kendrick Lamar is competing for 11 nominations, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd for 7. Not bad for Alabama Shakes and Florence + The Machine. Few days left for the most expected event for music lovers that will take place at the Staples Center.
The nominations for the most craved music award, this year at his 58th edition, see as the favourite the rapper Kendrick Lamar, thanks to his masterpiece To pimp a butterfly, with 11 nominations, chased by the pop diva Taylor Swift and by the new star of r&b The Weekend, with 7 nominations each.
Taylor Swift, the star of “1989” is one of the big favourite for this year among the recognitions assigned by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to the artists that received more validations in term of public in the precedent year.
The organizers gave furthers details about the live tribute to Lionel Richie: the voice of “All night lont” will be honoured in a choral exibition that see as protagonists the neo-soul star John Legend, Demi Lovato, Meghan Trainor and Luke Bryan. The four artists will perform in stage based on a medley of some of the most famous songs of the artist from Tuskegee, Alabama, extracted from his repertoire as a soloist and from the one shared with Commodores. To the tribute will take part, though for a short tract, Richie himself.
GRAMMY AWARD HISTORY
The Grammy Award is one of the most important award in the United States for the results obtained in the world of music. Originally it was named Gramophone Award and it’s presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Recording Academy), an association of american artists and technicians involved in the musical industry. It’s generally considered the equivalent of the Oscar in the motion picture industry.
The Grammy are assigned for 105 different contribution categories, divided in 30 musical genres, from pop to gospel to hip-hop. The winners are entrusted to a pool of experts (in this case the members of the Recording Academy). The name of the Grammy is referred to the trophy assigned to the winner – a small statue that represents a gramophone, handmade realized by Billings Artworks.
The delivering ceremony involves famous names of the world of music and the most important grammys are usually transmitted in live recording on tv.
Someone says the jury of Grammy tend to vote in a conservative way, basing the vote more on the fame of the artist than on strictly technical and artistic elements. As a consequence some musicians show off a certain indifference for this prize. Actually some of the most famous musicians in the history (like Elvis Presley, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Genesis or Bob Marley) received very few Grammy Awards.
They can be nominated to the prize albums released within the 30th of September 2 years before.
