SpongeBob, the musical with David Bowie, Cindy Lauper and many others


The spongy character loved by children and adults will have a musical all for him. There will be a special soundtrack created by stars of rock and pop scene. From David Bowie to Cindy Lauper, passing through John Legend.

They are all Spongebob’s fans. Unsuspected (or maybe not). Is for this reason they gladly lended themselves to sign the soundtrack of the musical that will debut in Chicago next summer. We’re talking about David Bowie, CindyLauper, John Legend, Flaming Lips, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, all united by the same passion for the magic see sponge. Between the minor names, anyway of cult, there are the Dirty Projectors, TI, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, Lady Antebellum e Panic! At The Disco.

The author of ‘Space Oddity’, ‘Ashes to Ashes’, ‘Heroes’, ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and the other artists had already reached an accord with Nickelodeon, the channel specialized in children and teenagers programs, who will produce the musical.

“All this extraordinary composers are fan of Spongebob” says Russel Hicks, president of content develop and of the production of Nickelodeon, at the Chicago Tribune.

The musical will be on stage from the 7th of June at the Oriental Theatre of Chicago, the open air temple of show, but the cast hasn’t be announced yet. Appeared for the first time in tv in 1999, Spongebob passed to the big screen with two movies. The musical will go on stage also in Broadway, in New York, and it has been conceived and developed by Tina Landau and Kyle Jarrow. The music supervisor is Tom Kitt, already winner of a Pulitzer for “Next to Normal”, who collaborated also with They Might Be Giants, Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T’s, T.I. and the Dirty Projectors.

The musical will be “a celebration of uncontrolled hope, unespcted heroes and pure, theatrical inventiveness” according to the producers.
The official announcement has been given the last 31st of August and Hicks said: “The music has always been an important part of the show and everybody realized the creative potential that could develop in that field. By now we have a story and a secondary plot, but everything will be seasoned with the special spices of the SpongeBob universe”.
